In a dramatic political development, senior Tamil Nadu leader K.A. Sengottaiyan has officially ended his 50-year association with the AIADMK and joined actor Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). His move marks one of the biggest political shifts in the state ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
A Veteran Walks Out After Five Decades
Sengottaiyan, a nine-time MLA and a strong influence in the Kongu belt, resigned from his Gobichettipalayam MLA post after being expelled from AIADMK.His exit came after a series of disagreements with the present AIADMK leadership regarding internal decisions and factional disputes.

With over five decades of political experience — serving under leaders like MGR and Jayalalithaa — Sengottaiyan’s departure is seen as a serious blow to AIADMK’s organisational strength, especially in western Tamil Nadu.
The Entry into TVK
A day after resigning, Sengottaiyan appeared at the TVK headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai, where Thalapathy Vijay personally welcomed him into the party. He was immediately given a key organisational role, covering crucial western districts like Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, and the Nilgiris — regions where he historically holds strong support.
Vijay praised his 50 years of experience, noting that his guidance would bring “clean, people-focused governance” to TVK’s future plans.
Impact on Tamil Nadu Politics
Sengottaiyan’s move is being watched closely by political analysts for three main reasons:
A major setback for AIADMK in the Kongu region, which is its stronghold.
A credibility boost for TVK, which is growing beyond just a star-powered party.
A signal of possible realignments in Tamil Nadu politics ahead of 2026, as more leaders may consider switching sides.
With this strategic move, TVK is now positioning itself as a serious contender in the next election cycle, backed by a mix of youth support and veteran leadership.
Why This Matters
The Kongu belt contributes a significant number of Assembly seats.Sengottaiyan stepping into TVK gives Vijay’s party immediate access to ground-level structures, local cadres, and long-standing networks — something new parties usually struggle to build.
For voters, this is a sign that political dynamics in Tamil Nadu are shifting. Traditional Dravidian parties are facing new competition from emerging players with fresh narratives and experienced faces.
